The election is now over. Did
your party win? Did you even vote?
If you did not vote, was it because
you didn't have anyone you liked on
your ballot? Perhaps you need to
start now to have a party you can
support on the ballot next time.
According to the Owen Sound Sun
Times, in early September, the
Federal Minister, Charles Mayer,
announced a farmer aid plan for
helping low income Canadian
farmers find work off the farm. This
idea was not well received by the
farming community in general.
Perhaps it would be worth the time
for low income farmers to take a
second look at this plan. After
reading the press release from the
Ministry of Agriculture and Food it
would appear to be a plan for
education only, to help people to
remain on the farm. The eligibility
should be discussed with your local
OMAF office, when and if this
program goes into effect.
"Choices" is another program for
farm families in financial difficulty.
The purpose of this program is to
provide assistance for farmers in
financial difficulty to hire a financial
management consultant, lawyer,
chartered accountant or health
professional to assist with developing
alternate courses of action for farm
operation; negotiation with creditors,
stress counselling; or preparing a
follow-up business plan. It is
important to contact your local
OMAF office for full details, on
purpose, eligibility and how to apply.

Looking at rural alternatives
Have you heard of "LETS", Local
Trading System which is a
community currency. The units of
currency are called "green dollars".
LETS was invented by Michael
Linton, in Courtenay, B.C. in 1983.
There are now over 100 LETS
systems active in communities all
around the world. It has come to
Saugeen Country by way of some
very energetic volunteers. Green
dollars measure the value that people
place on the goods and services they
want to trade, just like normal
Canadian money. You create green
dollars by spending, but you cannot
lose or steal them, for it is your
personal money. A Community
currency is a personal money system
that stays in the community. It
cannot go away to hire cheaper
labour (Mexico) or to chase higher
interest rates, so it keeps the local
economy going.
A LETS system consists of an
accounting system to record
transactions and a listing service for
account holders to advertise what
they need and what they have to
offer. For more details on the
Saugeen Trading community, you
can call any one of the core group
members: Lillian Burgess at 363-
5182; Pat Carson at 363-5394; Mike
Dyer at 369-2908; Monica Graf at
369-3488; Angus Inksetter at 364-
3331 or Jerrine Verkaik at 363-5785.

the labels and mail them to the Grey
County Federation of Agriculture
office in Hanover, 446 -10th Street,
Hanover, N4N 1P9. We will cancel
the magazine or paper for you as
there is no need to waste unwanted
papers or magazines. If you just toss
your copies away after you have
finished readng them, perhaps you
might consider passing it along to
someone else in the town or city.
This is a great way to let different
people know what is gong on in the
agriculture industry. Plus the
temporary saving at the landfill site.
The Grey -Bruce Market
Committee have scheduled a
conference at the Bayshore
Community Centre, on February 14
and 15. Watch the papers for more
details.

industry knows that you cannot limit
