SUMMARY
PRRS is a new viral disease
characterized by reproductive
failure in sows and respiratory
disease in young piglets. It has
been clinically active in North
America since 1987 and in Europe
since 1990. Clinical outbreaks in a
naive population are usually harsh
and may have severe economic
impact. Thereafter, outbreaks tail
off dramatically and herds become
subclinically infected. In
subclinically infected herds the
virus may circulate among nursery
pigs which develop respiratory
disease and multiple secondary
bacterial infections. A commercial
vaccine may become available some
time in 1994.0
