Windows get the treatment
BY KENDRA KRAUTER
As I promised last month, I would
like to continue our discussion on
"window treatments". There are so
many types of treatments to use
these days one wants to have fairly
extensive
knowledge of
what is
available before
taking the
plunge.
If you
require
straightforward
light control, the
least expensive
treatment is the
the basic roller
blind. They are
inexpensive and
readily
available, and
are very effective in controlling light
and giving you privacy. They are
available in many different fabrics,
trims and fringes. They are not all
the spring-loaded type either ... you
know, the ones that you have to hold
your mouth just the right way to
make them go up or down! You can
now buy roller blinds that operate
from a gear and chain system at the
side. These are a great new
invention and you can stop them at
the exact position you wish. Roller
blinds can be made more attractive
by laminating a fabric of your choice
onto the blind. This can be incor-
porated with a side drapery or cur-
tain and valance to soften the look.
Roll up blinds are another inex-
pensive idea. These blinds are made
of narrow wooden slats ... usually
bamboo ... tied together with
threads and rolled up from the
bottom. They will filter the light but
cannot be counted on to give you
total privacy or sun control. They
are ideal for a room with a tropical
look such as a sunroom or a room
with an Oriental mood. In the same
family we would also find a pull up
blind made from woven wood or
slats. This blind pulls up from
behind and folds like a Roman
Blind.
Roman Blinds or Roman Shades
are made from fabric and have a
substantial lining on the back to give
the blind stability, so the blind form
folds as it is drawn up. This style
will give the room a very smart,
clean look. These blinds are usually
a custom made -to -measure treatment
that takes a special know-how to
make. They can be used in just
about any decor, depending on the
fabric you select and the type of side
panels and valances you add. They
can be the only treatment as well.
Austrian Blinds or Austrian
Shades are fabric blinds that billow
into elegant swoops. They are very
formal and grand. They are usually
made of sheer fabrics, to give a
luxurious grand look. They, too, can
have side panels and valances added
over top.
Balloon Blinds are a very
beautiful window treatment and are
one of my personal favourites.
These blinds draw up from the
bottom in soft draped folds, but they
billow out as they are pulled up.
There are basically two types of
balloons to choose from: shirred
headings (gathered or smocked) and
box -pleated. The box -pleated
heading gives you a much more
tailored look, while the shirred
heading gives you a more feminine
look.
What is the difference between a
curtain and drapery? There is a
difference. A curtain is any hanging
fabric window covering, whereas a
drapery is a curtain that is lined. All
draperies are curtains but only Lined
curtains are draperies.
Glass curtains or sheers are a
translucent curtains placed next to
the glass. They diffuse the daylight
while offering some privacy for you
on the inside. The glass curtain
doesn't offer privacy at night when
the interior lights are on. You can
add a night liner behind a glass cur-
tain if necessary. Semi -sheers have
become popular because they do
offer a higher degree of privacy.
When making or buying sheers or
semi -sheers make sure they are triple
full — don't skimp on fabric. If you
are on a budget, select a less
expensive fabric. Try to keep your
