But even the threat of frost didn't do much to strengthen prices. We are still hearing conflicting reports about damage and basically, speculators simply got tired with no sign of news coming along, and gave up on their positions. As a result, futures prices drifted lower over the month. I still have a strong feeling that futures prices will move higher into harvest simply because I will be surprised if yields meet current projections. CORN In Ontario, the corn crop is ma- turing quickly and a small acreage has been harvested (September 16). It is surprising how quickly corn is drying down but soybean harvest will likely take precedence over corn. The first corn harvested will attract some good premiums, but other than wet millers, there won't be exceptionally strong demand. The one very positive fact seen so far is the exceptionally good quality even though yield might be lower than expected in the south. On September 9, USDA issued production and supply/demand reports. Corn production estimates were lowered by 124 million bushels to 7.229 billion and the projected ending stocks were dropped by 68 million bushels. Both domestic feed use and exports were reduced and even though the reports were quite bullish, futures prices did not move up because of the very negative soybean reports. Another report out this week that I thought was very significant
