Wasting energy
With growing interest I have
been reading Keith Roulston's
column dealing with the enormous
problems farmers nowadays are
facing. His subtle messages for
them to take the reins into their own
hands definitely need to be endorsed
and amplified!
The irresponsible actions of our
government, providing consumers
with so-called free (but not fair)
trade agreements and a North
American market place, had
detrimental effects not only on our
family farms but also on the health
and welfare of Canadian consumers.
As the World Watch Institute
found in their State -of -the -World
1991 survey "the typical mouthful
of North American food travels
2,000 km from farm field to dinner
table". This food is not only more
expensive than it needs to be
because transportation costs are
included in the price, but nutrients
are lost, invariably, as studies have
shown that within three days of
harvest vitamins and enzymes so
important to our health have
vanished to a Large degree. And
what kinds of pesticides have been
used on this imported food?
Nobody knows!
Our environment group began
sponsoring a farmers' market in
Lion's Head last year to re -introduce
consumers to the taste of freshness
and nutrition of local organically
grown foods as well as fresh home
baking with locally produced
ingredients and also local crafts
from natural materials. It has been
very popular and support has been
growing steadily.
The OntarBio Co-op of Durham
is another example where farmers
have come together to bring their
