Springs. The deep aquifer supplies a
seemingly unlimited amount of pure
water. Evan Hayter, one of the
partners in Algonquin, says it was
that pure water that attracted him to
Formosa.
In an age when amalgamations
have left only a few major brewers in
the province, micro breweries are
small, hands-on operations that offer
variety in taste for beer drinkers.
Hayter says Algonquin is "sort of the
way the brewery used to be ... a
local brewery for the community.
"We didn't come in here and tell
people make believe. We told them
from the start what we were going to
do and we did it. Now we're a part of
the community."
The brewery was just four years
old when, in 1992, the Financial
Times named it the number one
micro brewery in Canada. Two of the
brewery's beers have also taken gold
medals when brewers from around
the world have gathered in Brussels,
Belgium, to have their best products
judged by an international panel of
experts. Formosa springs Cold

Filtered Draft was awarded a Gold
Medal and the Algonquin Special
Reserve Ale received a Grand Gold
Medal, the highest award granted.
"I never doubted the brewery
would be successful, although I guess
it happened a lot faster than I
originally anticipated," says Hayter.
"The phenomenon of micro
breweries has exploded and we've
been part of the explosion."
Algonquin has been chosen the
official sponsor of the 1993
International Plowing Match at
Walkerton, just a few miles from its
home base. It created a special Bruce
County Lager in honour of the
Match. Hayter says the exposure the
brewery will be given by the 100,000
people attending the IPM will be a
big boost to the brewery.
The brewery plans to develop the
old Heisz family house, located on
the brewery property, into a museum
to honour the four generations of the
Heisz family that made Formosa
renowned for beer.°
