46 BRUCE COUNTY I.P.M. EDITION
There's no
worry about
too much
rain at
Fathom Five
park
While International Plowing
Match officials will be hoping for dry
weather to make their event a
success, many people come to Bruce
County specifically to get wet. One
of the unique attractions of the
county is the Fathom Five National
Marine Park where the best views are
under water.
The Cape Hurd Islands near
Tobermory has traditionally been a
treacherous area for shipping,
claiming many ships over the years
since white settlers came to the area.
Those wrecks have now been turned
into a unique park that draws divers
from across the continent to dive
down and visit the hulks.
Water has played a key role in the
area for millenniums. Over 400
million years ago warm tropical seas
covered the area, depositing layers of
lime muds and forming coral reefs.
Eventually a limestone bedrock
emerged. As the coral seas retreated,
lakes, rivers, and later, glacial ice, cut
into the bedrock, shaping a variety of
Iandforms. The largest deposit, the
Niagara Escarpment, disappears
under water at Tobermory, then rises
above the water again to form the
islands in Fathom Five.
The most famous of the 19 islands
in the park is Flowerpot Island,
known for its columns of limestone
rising from the water about six
kilometers from Tobermory.
Flowerpot is accessible by private
boat or by the tour boats that leave
Tobermory. The island has docks, a
shelter, picnic tables and fireplaces
and six campsites available on a first-
come, first-served basis. Trails on the
island lead visitors to the flowerpots
and to a fine example of caves.
Hikers can also make use of the
Bruce Trail and the Cyprus Lake trail
system on the mainland. The islands
