The Rural Voice, 1993-09, Page 39annoying in some people. But he
bases his opinions on education and
experience and tempers his comments
with some good old-fashioned
humility. It's obvious he enjoys
talking to people and learning more
about them if the number of questions
he asks is any indication.
Perhaps that's why he's heading
the Reunion committee which is
inviting all past IPM Chairs, Mayors
of Tented City and their wives to the
Bruce County plowing match for a
special assemblage on opening day.
They'll be treated to a noon luncheon
and will be part of the opening
parade. "It's the first time this has
ever been done," says Armstrong, his
excitement at the prospect obvious.
"I have felt for a long time that these
people give a lot of effort towards the
plowing match and when it is over
for their county, they are all
forgotten." So he sent out the
invitations and says the response has
been great.
As he walks me to the car, he says
the only other thing he hopes to see at
this year's match is a new attendance
record. Statistics reveal the highest
ever attended matches have been in
Bruce in 1976 and in Huron, at his
farm, in 1978.
As I drive away, I see him walking
back to the shed in the slow gait of
the older man and my thoughts turn
again to those carved portraits
hanging on the wall in the house. If
his daughter ever decides to design
the portrait of a plowman, I don't
think she would have to go far to look
for inspiration.0
