34 BRUCE COUNTY I.P.M. EDITION
Indeed, Jim wants to take the
evolution one step further by
changing the entire name of the
match, instead of just tacking another
name to the original. "I think it's
time we had a name that
complements the type of show we
have now," he says. "We need a
more catchy name to incorporate both
the rural life and the urban attraction,
like 'Progress
Show' or
'Farm and
Country Living
Show'." He
says he's been
after the name
change since
he was
president of
the OPA but he
hasn't got
much support
yet. He sees
the plowing match as a public
relations tool for the agriculture
industry and is pleased that the Bruce
County organizers feel the same way.

D
Jim isn't ready to give up the
plow or the plowing
competition. "Plowing is still an
important part of the match," he says.
"It's a skill that can be turn -ed into a
competition for people." It is also
vital, he says, to maintain the
competition for the sake of education.
"It's important that urban people
learn about plowing so that when
they drive down the road, they don't
look straight ahead but look to the
fields and are able to understand
what's happening to those fields in
order to get a bit of an idea what goes
into producing the food that they eat."
Even on the farm, the plow is still
an important tool, he believes, though
he doesn't discount the usefulness of
no -till equipment. "I've learned over
the years that you can't go off on a
tangent one way or the other. The
mouldboard plow has to be balanced
with the no -till by plowing one year
and using no -till the next," he says.
This year was the first time he used
no -till on his acreage and he admits
to being surprised at the good results
but he still believes both implements
are needed to counterbalance each
other.
