crop, committee members began trial
planting a few years ago to find a
variety that would be maturing
around mid-September. They finally
decided on two varieties that are
commonly used in Manitoba, both in
the 2500 -heat -range. "We were
lucky that soybeans are in season in
September but the corn was pretty
hard," admits Mr. Wilton. "We
might have to rush the corn a bit."
Along with soybean and corn
harvesting, hay fields will be cut,
raked, baled, bagged and foraged
throughout the week, depending on
weather. (Saturday has been set aside
as the rain date.) Then the harvested
fields will be used to demonstrate
tillage and no till practices. The
inclusion of no till is geared toward
an overall conservation theme of
Machines in Motion. "Everyone
today is interested in conservation
and what our show is trying to do is
to show the benefits and disadvant-
ages of different types of tillage." In
fact, Machines in Motion has a whole
set of demonstrations under the
heading "Environmental Showcase".
As chairman of the show,
Biermans of R.R. 2, Dobbinton is
probably the only member who wants
there to be rain during the event. But
he doesn't only want rain, he wants to
control where it falls and how much.
Fortunately, he isn't counting on
nature to meet his extreme demands -
he's borrowing a "rain machine"
from Agriculture Canada to
demonstrate the effects of rainfall on
land management. "We'll be using a
Rain Simulator, a machine that
creates an artificial environment for
rainfall, on three land situations -
bare ground, conservation tillage and
grassed sod " explained the farmer
who is intensely concerned about soil
management. The land types will
each be given an equal dose of "rain"
and the run-off from each land type
will be collected in trays so observers
can check the water quality for soil
erosion. "Obviously the grassed sod
is going to run clear while the bare
land will have significantly dirtier
water but a lot of farmers don't
realize how much soil does erode
until they see it," he says. "We want
to show farmers that we, who work
the land, need to move more towards
conservation tillage."
The Environmental Showcase will
