16 BRUCE COUNTY I.P.M. EDITION
Having the host site for the match
may also affect the Johnstons' corn
yield. This year, Bruce County is
hosting a Machine in Motion show
where people will get a chance to see
new machines harvest crops.
Accordingly, some of the family's
corn fields will be used for the
demonstration. But because the
match is in mid-September,
organizers planted an early maturing
corn which requires around 2500 heat
units, rather than the commonly
planted 2600 heat unit corn. The
down side of early maturity is a
possible decrease in yield, says
Campbell. It's clear that hosting a
match requires some pre -planning but
both brothers say there is no real
sacrifice. Evidently not, since
they've been through it before and
were quite willing to host it again.
Their co-operation thrills IPM
organizers. "They're just super,"
says Brunton. "We were quite happy
that they agreed to host the match
because we know the kind of people
we're dealing with."
Cumming can only agree.
"They've been very receptive.
They're great people." Of course, he
may be a little biased, considering
he's related to Nellie. However,
there's no doubt Nellie has made an
indelible impact on IPM organizers
who describe her with such adjectives
as "sweet" and "wonderful". But
these words of praise are clearly just
the icing on the cake, for there's more
to Nellie than just a sweet
personality. She has a solid record of

community involvement in such
organizations as the Women's
Institute, Walkerton Agricultural
Society and Eastern Star. She's been
with the local WI branch, Brant and
Greenock, since it was established 30
years ago, and the Walkerton
Agricultural Society has benefited
from her involvement for over a
quarter of a century. She's held
offices, including president, in both
organizations. Nellie also lends her
helping hand at Brucelea Haven, a
