Being safe just makes sense
The editor of a farm magazine
recently was whining about the lack
of fashionable hcadwcar to ward off
UV rays. He was also lamenting
the inconvenience of having to use
sun screen. The poor fellow.
Perhaps he thinks skin cancer is
preferable to looking Tike a member
of the French Foreign Legion. I
doubt that any groundhogs in his
back 40 care what he looks like.
In another editorial the same
fellow was preaching about the
dangers of working on Sunday. It
is simply the result of more acres to
cover with less help. I'm not
talking about routinely working
Sundays, but if the hay is dry, it
gets baled around here.
Most farmers are quite familiar
with being pressed for time. Is this
an excuse for being thoughtless of
others around us? After a tragic
event earlier this spring, you would
think farmers should know better.
The other day I saw a fellow
roaring down the shoulder of the
highway on his tractor, and what do
you suppose he had with him? Two
small children, one perched on each
fender. Do some farmers not see or
hear? Do some farmers have no
regard for the safety of their young
ones? Are some farmers stupid?

52 THE RURAL VOICE
Someone suggested to me that
farmers are hard to change in their
ways. I suppose most people are,
but does this mean total disregard
of common sense safety rules?
Next time a situation arises when
you are pressed for time, consider
the consequences of not thinking
clearly. Whether it is taking time to
get proper protection from the sun
or waiting for someone to take care
of your children, don't be foolish,
do the smart thing. Even if you
have to work on a Sunday.
Above all else I hope that we
have decent weather for a fruitful
harvest because nothing makes a
farmer more grumpy (stupid?) than
lousy weather.0
