The Rural Voice, 1993-05, Page 31nineteenth century, however, did not completely eliminate snake fences. Many of them are still used in Ontario today. Why did this simple fence design persist, whereas other designs, like the Model T Ford, came and went? There is no single answer to this question. The zigzag fence was made of white cedar trees, which grew in the Great Lakes - St. Lawrence forest region. These cedars, when cut down with crosscut saws and split into rails, provided weather -resistant wood for the building of fences. Farmers hauled the rails to location and put them in place between fields and neighbouring farms. For those farmers with cedar trees, it ensured a cost-effective, if labor-intensive way of constructing a fence. Unlike stone and stump fences, these snake fences could be opened up easily to enable farmers to enter another field with equipment, or to change pastures for their cattle. And because of its simple construction, it could easily be diverted around trees which happened to be in the way. The most important feature of these fences, however, was their durability. The fact that many such fences constructed in the early part of this century still stand, attests to their „«durability. In my research I came across The style of the fences was altered to make them more sturdy.
