There are two kinds of bags in
those piles. As well as the straight
alfalfa cubes, the company makes a
cube that combines half third -cut
alfalfa and half whole -grain corn
silage, called alfa -maize. "It's not as
high in protein as the straight alfalfa
but it is higher in energy and it's a
sweeter feed that the animals really,
really like," Ackert says. "Even as a
straight feed it can produce some
preuy good gains."
Just like everybody else, Canadian
Agra had problems with the weather
last year. Yields were about the same
as normal but getting a quality
product off the field was difficult.
"The moisture content of the product
we brought into the plant was
extremely high, thus increasing our
drying costs dramatically. If we left it
out there (in the field) to dry it was
going to spoil on us so we had to
bring it in and a lot of it was in at
over 65 percent moisture which just
sky -rockets your costs."
In some cases, where the hay in
the swath couldn't be rescued, the
company reached an agreement with
the grower on what the yield was,
paid for that yield, then brought in
