management."
The main benefits, he says, have
been harvesting 30-60 acres of
pasture for hay, plus the ability to
"concentrate fertility, clipping and
reseeding programs to specific areas
of the farm." It also allowed them to
include 30-40 short -keeps in early
summer increasing the stocking rates.
The project was first initiated on a
250 -acre pasture block in 1986. Six
paddocks were established, a high
tensile electric fence creating a
common alleyway to watering
facilities.
"While the initial grazing project
helped to control selective grazing, it
was still a problem."
In 1992 it was decided to make the
paddocks smaller, 30 acres, retain the
central alleyway and put in new
watering facilities.
"Both would provide more
flexibility and control throughout the
season."
With the new waterline laid there
is potential for four 300 -gallon water

Dr. Neil Anderson, a Cattle Health
Specialist with OMAF, has made a
study of cattle survival and disease
treatment at the Ontario Community
Pasture farms.
He says, "the health and survival
of the cattle entrusted to the care of
community pasture managers in 1992
was excellent. There was a minimum
of disease, injury and death."
Susan Robinson, OMAF pasture
management specialist, says "Each of
the 12 farms is unique. Scattered
across the province they differ in
size, the type of land being farmed,
prevailing weather conditions, the
class and number of cattle pastured,
management programs and operating
budgets."
While each pasture and its
conditions are unique, the goal, to
produce beef, is common.
Over one million pounds of beef
was produced on the 12 community
farms in 1992.0
