New crop soybean basis has
softened slightly in anticipation of a
large crop in Ontario as well as
fluctuations in the Canadian dollar. It
appears that soybean crush next year
will be very good in Ontario, but if the
crop does reach the predicted 60
million bushels, there could be an
extreme glut of soys on the market at
harvest time. If you need to sell
soybeans at harvest, it would be
advisable to forward contract a portion
of your crop soon.
FEED GRAINS
Ontario barley and mixed grain
prices have dropped recently as fairly
large quantities of feed grains have
been offered by producers. Barley has
been tightly held by producers for
several months when there was some
demand evident. But now with grade
five corn in abundant supply at cheap
prices, usage of barley has dropped
dramatically. In fact, right now barley
is priced out of all feed mixes except
in the cases where the ingredients are
fixed regardless of price. Today,
Ontario barley is offered at $85/mt
FOB farm while mixed grain is trading
in the $90 area.
Western wheat futures have
strengthened slightly over the past
month, but not enough to allow corn
back into feed rations. The amount of
feed wheat in Western Canada could,
in theory, keep Ontario supplied for
months to come. The relative values
of wheat and corn will determine
whether or not this happens.
Let's try to look ahead with some
optimism. Prices of small grains are
not high enough to cover costs, but if
you prefer to use cereal grains or need
straw, don't change your plans. On
the other hand, oilseed prices are high
enough to make their production pro-
fitable and you would be wise to sell
some production at these prices. Corn
prices are at a level that is profitable
for good growers, but no better than
break even for others. There will pro-
bably be some opportunities to for-
ward contract corn at profitable prices
or if there is carry in the futures prices,
you might be able to store profitably.
Marketing is a never ending cycle that
can be rewarding.0
