The fry are fed by hand many
times a day, granular feed for the
little ones. The larger ones get a
coarser pellet and are fed less often.
The feed is high in fat and protein,
containing meal and canola oil. A
scoop of pellets is thrown on top of
the water. Outside, in the raceways,
the trout near market weight are self -
fed. They can nudge a gadget so that
the pellets from a canister drop onto
the water.
On a trout farm, the •
availability and quality of
water is a priority. Okygen
is pumped into water coming
from a 420 foot artesian well. The
water from the well is cold, about 48
degrees Fahrenheit summer and
winter. The water from the holding
tanks and raceways is distributed into
ponds beside the creek.
Water quality must be checked
continually for levels of oxygen.
Since there is hydrogen sulphide in
the water, it must be taken out and

the hydro goes out so that oxygen can
continue to be pumped into the water.
The pressure from the well is
sufficient to force the water through
columns.
Cold, constant water and nutritious
feed produce a good quality,
marketable trout. The water is so
cold that if you fall into it, it takes
your breath away. Charter says he
should have chains or heavy rubber
bands on his boots for walking on the
ice. He said that once he fell in
carrying a large paper bag of feed,
but that he threw it out before he got
out himself.
