adjust our deductions to take more
from higher -priced crops, less from
lower -value crops," Zettel says. "We
don't want to bring about a situation
where everyone went into higher
value crops."
This price adjustment is part of the
co-operative philosophy that means
not everyone will fit in to the
organization. "Only a segment of the
population can live with the co-
operative ideal," he says. "It's quite a
commitment to live with a collective
rather than individual profit for
farmers. A member has to be willing
to throw his heart into it. There could
be times they could receive a lower
return through the co-op."
With a small market like spelt
where one farmer can easily grow 10
per cent of the provincial market,
Zettel explains, brokers can play one

important as the marketing aspect,
helping keep farmers feeling they're
part of the operation. That can only

small organization, one of the reasons

don't feel much power on your own
and you feel so helpless. In any
reform movement there's the
fellowship of like minds."
