Smelski gets Canada 125 award Popular Perth county pork specialist Richard Smelski was presented with a Canada 125 medal at the recent annual meeting of the Perth County Pork Producers. Dr. Harry Brightwell, M.P. for Perth -Wellington -Waterloo presented the award on behalf of Governor General Ray Hnatyshyn. The award was one of a number presented to people for their achievements in a wide range of areas according to Dr. Brightwell. Dr. Brightwell said Smelski came immediately to mind as a candidate for the award because of his long years of work particularly with the Pork Producers and with the Ontario Pork Congress. At the Pork Producers meeting in Stratford January 28, Vince and Nancy Hulshof were named producers of the year. Ivan and Ann Roobroech won the Stratford Fall Fair Carcass Competition. John and Lorene Donaldson of Lori - Jo Supermarket in Stratford were named winners of the Promotion Award.O Bruce farmer wins American award Bruce County farmer Stan Eby is one of three Ontario farmers to be chosen to receive the American Forage and Grassland Council's "Outstanding Grassland Farmer Award" for 1992. The award is presented to farmers in recognition of excellence in forage crop production. The American Forage and Grassland Council is a non-profit organization, serving as a spokesman for forage -based agriculture. Eby received his award at the annual meeting of the Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association in Toronto.0 Auburn -area farmer heads Jersey Club An Auburn -area farmer has been elected president of the Ontario Jersey Club for 1993. Hans Boonstoppel, R.R.1, Auburn was chosen head of the organization which represents over 500 Jersey breeders at the annual meeting in London in late January. The 50 -year- old farmer has been a member of the Perth -Huron Jersey Club for 17 years, since he and his wife Audrey moved to their Auburn farm. He has farmed with Jerseys for 25 years. "They're very efficient in converting feed to milk," he said.0 Huron Junior Farmers honour rural leaders While Huron County Junior Farmers have been agonizing about the future of their own organization, they continue a tradition of honouring the leadership of the rural community. The group honoured three local people recently with Rural Leadership Awards. Bill Wallace, R.R.4, Seaforth was honoured for his work with the Huron Milk Committee where he served as chairman for three years, the Seaforth Farmers Co-op where he was chairman for two years, and the Huron -Perth Supply Management Committee where he was chairman from 1989-92. He is presently president of the Huron County Federation of Agriculture. Marjory Humphries of Walton, a 37 -year member of the Walton Women's Institute was also honoured. As well as being a president of her local institute and holding all executive posts, she has served at the district level. Keith Williamson, R.R.3, Walton, the third winner, has been president of the Huron Farm Safety Association for two years, has been a director of the Huron County Federation of Agriculture and a Junior Farmer.0 Hans Boonstoppel: heads Ontario Jersey Club.
