26 THE RURAL VOICE
reminded the audience. It's
impossible to farm and produce food
and be totally natural. One of the
greatest changes in the environment
occurred with the clear -cutting of the
huge forests across Ontario in the
period from 1820
to 1880. Farmers
had so many trees
that they burned
them, sifting the
ashes to make
potash to send to
Europe. Yet if they
hadn't done that,
there wouldn't be
the fields where the
food is grown to
feed Ontario's
burgeoning pop -

Surgeoner
ulation today.
While it's important the plan be
voluntary now, Dr. Surgeoner was
candid in suggesting that once the
good farmers had cleaned up their act
several years from now, it may be
necessary to rely on legislation to
regulate "the bad apples".
Farmers going through the farm
plan will encounter 23 different
sections dealing with all aspects of
their farm. How long it takes to
complete the plan will depend on
how many different aspects there are
to the farm, says Brian Miller. A
farmer who grows only cash crops
will ignore many of the sections
dealing with livestock and manure
management. Until a large number of
farmers start completing the plans it's
impossible to be sure how much
effort is involved. "It's going to take
a good chunk of a day after you've
been to a workshop," Miller said.
Farming is not a natural activity but
its effect on nature can be minimized
with proper care.
