Cold weather and meetings go together
January 8, 1993
It's 8:00 a.m. and 42° below zero.
Every animal out there has an aura of
"steam -heat" rising from their furry
coats. Now I understand why leather
is so warm to wear. Some of our
locals were even lucky enough to
receive leather -wear for Christmas
gifts this past year. They say that
leather is a symbol of love and
warmth. So much for the Bovine
commercial.
January meetings and cold
weather seem to go together in the
Rainy River Valley. The Rainy River
Federation of Agriculture held their
January meeting at the Stratton
Separate School. It was a very cold
evening and also Elvis Presley's
birthday. President Rick Boersma
chaired the meeting with directors,
Linda Armstrong, Sue Boersma,
Amos Brielmann, Wayne Flatt, Mike
Zimmerman, Tammy Hunsperger,
Jack Vandenbrand, and Shirley
Morrish attending.
Amos Brielmann reporting for
Soil and Crop presented interesting
and informative facts on the Crow
Rate, hoping it will change for the
better. Will local farmers benefit
from this? He'd like to get some
answers about the money spent on
this venture from OMAF.
The Wheatboard held their Annual
meeting, and the new executive is:
President, Bill Romyn; Vice -
President, Rudy Sinneghe;
Secretary/Treasurer, Rick Neilson;
Amos Brielmann, John Vandenbrand
Jr., Glenda Weir, Larry Lamb, Karl
VanHeyst, and Bob Radbourne as
Regional Director who will alternate
with Don Belluz of Thunder Bay area
to rotate their representation at
meetings in Toronto. Amos also
mentioned that the local farmers
would like more input at the Research
Station. He also felt that Crop
Insurance was totally unfair with
Pay -outs. He feels that it's a big
mess that should be cleaned up fast,
and re -vamped for "spot losses".
"We are not treated the same as the
Southern Ontario producers," Amos
said.
Henry Kaemingh is the new
Northwestern Ontario Representative
for the Ontario Crop Insurance
Commission. Henry was nominated
by the Christian Farmers Federation
of Ontario. Henry and his son Arnold
operate a Dairy farm south of Devlin.
On Monday, January 11, Mike
Zimmerman and Peter VanHeyst will
attend the Annual Milk Producers
board meeting at the Royal York in
Toronto. Linda Armstrong urged
everyone to attend the annual Rainy
River District Cattlemen's meeting at
the Stratton Separate School on
January 20.
A letter from MPP Howard
Hampton was read; stable funding
has been tabled again.

food and a chance to visit your
neighbour. Everyone is welcome;
remember your favourite dish, your
skates, and some smiles.
Calving has begun for 1993,
remember the Tattoo Letter for this
year is "C".
Every meeting that I have attended
in the past couple of weeks has
emphasized Marketing. It all leads to
mass confusion when people ask a lot
of questions and are answered by
people who just seem to ask more
questions. Someone out there must
have answers to make some Progress.
There are many "P"s in Marketing;
Product, Price, Place, Promotion, ...
we just need someone to direct
Properly.
The next RRFA meeting is
February 4 at the OMAF office.

mushroom. As soon as you put
your head above the ground,
someone heaps another load of
fertilizer on it."
