now home to a farm manager, seven
technicians, agricultural workers and
summer students. Facilities include
three labs, equipment to clean and
thresh plot samples, a large
refrigeration storage unit, and a
workshop/storage structure.
Over 300 farm and industry
personnel attend the annual one -day
Crops Update at the farm, which is
also a popular stop for touring farm
groups from Canada and the U.S.
Conference accommodation is one
more burgeoning area of public
service. For many years only a
hockey school booked Huron Hall, a
superbly equipped, self-contained, air
conditioned 200 -bed residence with
single and double rooms, cafeteria,
auditorium and recreation room all
under one roof. In the past four
years, groups as disparate as the
Fertilizer Institute of Ontario, the
United Church, and ex -military
personnel have booked the centre
during summer break. Rob Black,
full-time conference accommodation
co-ordinator, reports that CCAT
hosted 1,900 people divided among
50 organizations in 1992 from April
through to September.
The addition of a computer lab, a
board room, and a conference room
will turn the other residence, Bruce
Hall, into a 150 -bed conference
centre.
The younger generation is not
forgotten, either. Out -of -classroom
programs, and summer camps, show
elementary school children the
exciting partnership between science
and agriculture. AgExcursion brings
seventh and eighth graders on
campus for two hours. Computer
camp participants, aged 10 to 13,
sleep over. The week-long Ag -
Venture day camp runs twice each
summer, each time giving 24 nine- to
12 -year-olds a potpourri of what goes
on in agriculture — everything from
pet care to engineering popsicle -suck
bridges. Fun with Food and
Computers, another week-long camp
for 11- to 14 -year-olds, dispels the
myth that food comes from boxes.
The latest, a three-day EnviroCamp,
introduces 10- to 12 -year-olds to life
in pond and stream.
The CCAT has proven its amazing
capacity to adapt and evolve,
becoming in the process a college for
the entire community.0
