The Rural Voice, 1993-02, Page 33says the study showed there were
hundreds of programs directed at
community development, but little
co-ordination or shared knowledge.'
The Huron Community Services
Network was a natural outgrowth of
this study. CCAT is producing a
directory to be published this spring,
listing all the services available at
municipal, county, provincial and
federal levels as well as private
agencies, service clubs, doctors,
recreational facilities, and other areas
of interest to Huron County residents.
Participation in the federally
funded Huron Industrial Training
Advisory Committee is an important
arm of CCAT's extension education
program.
Both Biondi and McDonald have
represented CCAT on HITAC's agri-
cultural sub -committee, composed of
someone from HITAC, the county ag
rep and a couple of well-known and
respected local farmers. The latest
project, a joint effort with Conestoga
College, is a six-week course this
month for UI recipients on starting a
business.
Until last year, HITAC had the
authority to assess need within
Huron, and arrange the necessary
training. At one time 40 per cent of
funds went to agriculture -related
courses, and CCAT was the major
deliverer.
The provincial government has
begun the process of setting up
regional training boards encompas-
sing three or four counties. The local
agricultural advisory sub -committee
will still determine needs, but
recommendations will be submitted
to the Ontario Agricultural Training
Institute who will call for tenders
after approving a course. At present,
college personnel are writing training
manuals for the Institute.
Don Stewart, HITAC's Executive
Assistant, is concerned that with the
move away from the grassroots,
CCAT's expertise may not be used as
much as before.
Biondi doesn't yet know how this
change will affect funding. The cost
of on -campus continuing education
courses is fully recovered by a charge
to participants. Those enrolled in off -
campus courses pay a registration fee,
and the rest is subsidized.
