Kevin Kale: massive volunteer effort
involved in week-long event.
about where their food actually
comes from. Another package will
include things to do when the
students return to their classroom
afterward. Since each student will
only visit two of the six stations,
they'll share their experiences back in
class so that every student knows
what went on in all six
demonstrations.
All the activities, Muegge says,
will be hands-on and will "fit directly
into the curriculum". Students will
have to use their math and science
skills, for instance, in figuring out
how much feed animals should get.
The project is not one to take on
lightly. While the organizing group
includes only about 13 people, each
of the six stations will require eight to
10 volunteers each day to work with
the students. Each of the interest
areas is to recruit its own volunteers.
Organizers are planning on feeding
70-80 volunteers each day. As well,
20-25 volunteers will be needed to set
up the displays. Costs for the
demonstrations have been kept low
so it appears the fees to the classes
will pay the costs, Kale says.
Although grade 4 and 5 students
are the target audience, there will also
be an open evening program for
parents, brothers and sisters and the
public in general on Thursday, April
15. As well, the Huron County Board
of Education will tape the event and a
local cable TV station will provide
coverage.0
