Grain Markets
in soybean acreage in Ontario this
year.
Soybean futures prices are
holding quite strong compared to
past years due to the strong
worldwide demand for soy products.
Adding to the support are reports of
spotty dry weather in South
America.
FEEDGRAINS
Prices for feed grains have held
steady over the past month with
Western feed wheat selling for $123
to $125 per mt. Western barley is
selling for $126 to $127 and is
staying strong because Ontario
producers are either holding onto
their barley or feeding it on the farm.
There has been a small amount of
mixed grain trade in the $108 to
$110 area.
Let's try to look ahead to the
spring of 1993. According to many
industry people, we will see a reduc-
tion in Ontario corn acres but a fairly
large increase in soybeans. With
wheat plantings down over 200,000
acres from last year, this acreage will
be planted to soybeans and small
grains while the unharvested corn
acres will likely go into soys.
Weather forecasters are divided as to
how the year will unfold
weatherwise. In all probability, we
will not see conditions as bad as they
were in 1992 and weather should get
back to near normal.
Assuming somewhat normal
conditions, producers should be
looking at some forward selling of
new crop soybeans. With acreage
increasing and basis levels holding
strong, it appears an opportunity is at
hand. Just keep in mind that there is
some risk involved in the event you
don't have product to ship.
On the other hand, you may want
to be cautious about contracting new
crop corn. With a smaller acreage in
1993, don't get carried away by
selling too large a portion of your
crop. There will be an opportunity
to get a reasonable return for your
crop at some time during the year.0
