Tasty drinks to take
away winter's chill
Residents of the Snowbelt Region have always found
pleasure in challengingthe outdoors in winter. As the
crisp opaqueness of resh fallen snow beckons, the
hale and hearty take pleasure in gathering together for
a day on the slopes or on the trails.
Yet, one of the greatest pleasures is returning to sit
h a roaring fire and warming up with a hot, tasty
drink.
Whether your preference is for specialty coffees,
alcoholic or non-alcoholic, whether for yourself or
guests, here are several ideas to take away the chill.

MULLED CIDER AND TEA
4 cups (1L) freshly brewed tea
4 cups (1L) apple cider or juice
2 cinnamon sticks, broken
12 whole cloves
2 slices fresh ginger root, peeled
brown sugar or liquid honey to
taste
orange slices, halved, and
cinnamon sticks for garnish.
Combine tea, cider, broken
cinnamon sticks, cloves and ginger in
a saucepan and bring to a boil.
Reduce heat and simmer for five
minutes, stirring occasionally. Taste
and sweeten with brown sugar or
honey.
Transfer to crock pot or to a
container to cool and refrigerate for
reheating later. Makes 8 cups (2L).
BERRY ORANGE
2 cups (500 ml) freshly brewed tea
2 1/2 cups (625 ml) raspberry or
cranberry cocktail
1/2 cup (125 ml) orange juice
1/4 cup (50 ml) brown sugar, or to
taste
1 each: orange and lemon, halved
and thinly sliced
1 cinnamon stick, broken
6 cardamom pods
Combine all ingredients in a
saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce
heat and simmer for five minutes,
stirring occasionally. Taste and
sweeten as desired.
Transfer to crock pot, or to a
container to cool and refrigerate for
reheating later. The recipe can easily
be doubled. Makes 6 cups (1.5L).
CREAMY SWISS MOCHA
MIX
1 cup (250 ml) instant skim milk
powder
1/3 cup (75 ml) coffee whitener
1/4 cup (50 ml) instant coffee
granules
1/4 cup (50 ml) sugar
2 tbsp (30 ml) unsweetened cocoa
powder
boiling water
Combine skim milk powder,
coffee whitener, coffee granules,
sugar and cocoa.
For one serving add 3/4 cup (175
ml) boiling water to 3 to 4 tbsp (45 to
60 ml) Creamy Swiss Mocha Mix.
For five servings add 4 cups (1 L)
boiling water to all the Creamy Swiss
Mocha Mix.
