Make farm safety your #1 priority!
I found out this past fall that there
is a right way and a wrong way to lift
something heavy. I did it the wrong
way and the result was a pulled
muscle in my lower back — a very
painful and frustrating thing to have
happen during harvest.
The injury left me useless for a
couple of days but it made me realize
how important a farmer's health is and
how easily it can be lost. While I was
at the hospital getting X-rays a fellow
came in by ambulance. One of the at-
tendants told me the injured man was
a farmer and had somehow got his
arm into a chain on a machine while it
was running. He lost a finger and the
use of his arm for quite a while. Just
the day after that I read of a woman
who got caught in an auger and was
killed.
What is wrong with us farmers?
Are we not aware of the danger or are
we too aware of the danger and simply
dismiss it? Farming is a very danger-
ous job and accidents happen quickly
and when we least expect them. Some
people don't seem to realize the
dangers around them. For the sake of
time saved they will expose them-
selves and others to dangers and tell
themselves that nothing will happen to
them. It would take a couple of hours
and a few dollars to have that PTO
shield fixed properly but it would take
longer to get uscd to a wheelchair if
you lost a leg on an exposed PTO.

52 THE RURAL VOICE
Some dangers are not as obvious.
Why do I still see children riding or
even driving farm machinery? It may
be cheap labour but you could never
forgive yourself if something terrible
happened. Indeed it could turn out to
be very costly. No crop or job is
worth risking the health or life of a
child.
Please don't snicker and say that I
am exaggerating. Call the farm safety
association and they will give you the
cold statistics. Children as young as
two years of age are victims of farm
accidents! That is a tragedy and a
disgrace. Be smart, be safe.
