PERTH COUNTY FEDERATION OF AGRICULTURE ANNUAL MEETING
Perth County Federation of
Agriculture held its Annual meeting
on October 9. Also held that evening
were elections for delegates for OFA
convention.
The following people were elected
to represent their region at OFA
convention.
PERTH CENTRAL:
Director — Kelli Crowley
Delegates — Matt Crowley, Burnell

Smith
PERTH SOUTH:
Director — Mary McIntosh
Delegates — Rick DcBrabandere,

There were four resolutions
passed and these will be sent to OFA.
RESOLUTION #1: Waste Manage-
ment
WHEREAS the Province helps to
debenture the cost of handling waste
in the cities and towns of Ontario,
and
WHEREAS there are farms in
Ontario with a volume of waste equal
to that of some municipalities
THEREFORE BE IT RE-
SOLVED that the OFA insist that the
Provincial government offer to help
debenture the capital cost of
appropriate solutions.
RESOLUTION #2: Bill 40
WHEREAS the Ontario Govern-
ment proposed legislation (Bill 40)
will allow unions and civil employees
a lever to escalate input cost and
taxes, that when passed on through
the economy, force farmers to expand
production in excess of markets to
cover the increased costs, leaving low
margins and squeezed profits,
THEREFORE BE IT RE -

SOLVED that the OFA consider
lobbying the Ontario Government to
demand a study of Bill 40 of the
effect of passed on costs.
RESOLUTION #3: Cuts in Land
Stewardship II
WHEREAS farmers must honour
15 -year contracts signed with the
Federal government in the National
permanent cover crop program, or
face legal action, and
WHEREAS farmers also signed
3 -year contracts with the Provincial
government in Land Stewardship II,
and
WHEREAS the Provincial gov-
ernment has now decided not to
honour their part of the contract for
year 3 in Land Stewardship II,
THEREFORE BE IT RE-
SOLVED that the OFA do everything
possible to force the government of
Ontario to honour the Land
Stewardship II contract that farmers
signed in good faith with them.
RESOLUTION #4: Private Land
Forestry
WHEREAS the Ministry of
Natural Resources' (MNR) practice
of growing and distributing tree
seedlings, at a price far below the
cost of production, creates a very
serious and unfair level of
competition to Ontario tree farmers,
and
WHEREAS the continuing need
for tree planting in Ontario is
recognized as being great, and
WHEREAS farmers across
Ontario would benefit substantially if

given an opportunity to enter a
seedling tree industry, free from
government competition,
THEREFORE BE IT RE-
SOLVED that OFA vigorously lobby
MNR to phase out its production of
private land forestry trees, in an
orderly fashion, over a 5 -year period,
thereby opening a window of
opportunity for Ontario farmers to
create a vibrant and competitive tree
seedling industry, and
THEREFORE BE IT RE-
SOLVED that OFA request MNR
presence be maintained in private
land forestry in a research &
development capacity, rather than in
a production role.
