The living
benefits of life
insurance
Many of us look at life insurance as
simply protection for our families. We
do a little shopping around, pick a
policy and that's that.
Did you know that, aside from
death benefits (money paid to depend-
ents at the time of death), your perma-
nent (or whole life) policy also pro-
vides many types of "living benefits"?
Permanent insurance protects you for
your entire life, as opposed to term
insurance, which covers you for a
specific number of years.
Prepayment, which is not offered
by all life companies, is reserved for
those suffering from a terminal illness.
Those who qualify are provided with
some of their death benefit while they
are still alive, to allow them to die with
dignity.
There are several types of living
benefits including Dividends, Cash
Surrender Values, Policy Loans and
Annuities.
Dividends are available to anyone
who selects a policy that specifically
includes dividends. With this type of
policy, you are really sharing in the
performance of the company. Each
year the company analyzes its results
and if they are better than the estimates
used to set the original premium rate,
you will receive a "policy dividend"
— a part of the profits. As they are
based on profit, policy dividends
cannot be guaranteed.
Dividends can be cashed; used to
purchase additional life insurance pro-
tection; left on deposit to accumulate;
or used to reduce your premiums.
Cash Surrender Values — Whole
life policies have three basic elements:
the amount payable upon death; the
premium payments; and a cash value
that grows while the policy remains in
force prior to a death claim. The cash
surrender value is the amount you
would receive if the policy was
cancelled.
Most permanent life insurance
policies include a schedule of cash
surrender value, which gives you the
amount of money you would receive
according to the number of years the
policy has been in force.
