Where the cereal crop was underseeded to red clover and only annual weeds are present, clip the field early to control the annual weeds. This will allow sufficient time for the red clover to regrow and out compete these weeds. In cereals underseeded to red clover it is better to control bindweed and other weeds and kill the red clover than to leave the field.° Rick Jefferson Farm Management Specialist Feeding sprouted wheat to pigs The nutritive value of sprouted wheat for pigs will depend on kernel sprout size and the proportion of sprouted and non -sprouted kernels in a given volume of grain. Sprouted kernels which have roots and/or shoots visible contain about 92 per cent of the energy of non -sprouted kernels. There is no significant difference in the energy content of non -sprouted kernels and sprouted kernels which are enlarged and have cracked hulls as the only sign of sprouting. Protein percentage increases slightly with sprouting as energy decreases; however, for optimum performance, assume the protein content of sprouted and non -sprouted wheat is the same. Soft winter wheat can directly substitute for corn on a kg for kg basis. Grind wheat -based diets coarsely (ie. through a 4.5 to 6.4 mm screen) to avoid dustiness and increase palatability. Suggested maximum inclusion rates for wheat in pig diets are: starter diets — 400 kg/tonne (or 40 per cent); sow and grower -finisher diets — 570 kg/tonne (or 57 per cent). Sprouted wheat may contain mycotoxins (such as zeralenone and vomitoxin) because the weather conditions which cause sprouting also encourage mold growth. Pig producers who want to feed their own wheat should check their fields for fusarium mold before harvest. If NORDIQUE "1" CORDWOOD PORTABLE SAW 3 PT.
