Canadian unity st
Up till now my column has
primarily dealt with farm politics.
This time I will digress from that
worthwhile topic and devote this
page to Canada.
If you are like
me you will be
bored to death
with the
discussions on a
new constitution
for our country,
but we just have
to bite the bullet
a month longer, I
hope. The
length of time
depends on how
we vote in the
referendum on
the constitution-
al proposals. If
we vote "yes" it
will be over except for those who
think the ideas will ruin Canada. If
we vote "no" the whole rigmarole
will start again, probably with added
demands from special interest
groups which would weaken the
proposals even more.
What we have to consider is that
13 groups now have reached some
agreement they are not all happy
with, but with which they can live.
That is a tremendous accomplish-
ment. Think about it. Half the
country didn't want the senate
changed and most of the country
didn't want to give our Quebec
brothers a distinct society, and
British Columbia wanted more seats
in the senate than proposed, and
more. If any one of the provinces
had rejected any one of these de-
mands there would be no agreement
and the country would remain in
turmoil.
Many of the letters to the editor
in the daily press have bitterly
attacked the Quebec people for
being different. Or is it us that are
different? Is Quebec the problem or
is it us?
It is only a few years ago that a
Chinese man was attacked on the
streets of Toronto for not being able
to speak English. Has that attitude
cnanged? Is the English language
sacred?
Yes, Quebec passed a stupid law
Tuggle nears climax
against the use of English language
signs. Why should that make us
angry if Bourassa and his crowd
make themselves the butt of jokes
across the globe?
In a country so big and so diverse
there will never be a perfect consti-
tution. The demands of special
interest groups, like the National
Action Committee on the Status of
Women, native women, homosex-
uals and others (no farmers, thank
you) are ridiculous to the extreme.
The constitution is a law to which
all other laws are subject. The
Charter of Rights adequately
protects special interest groups.
When I came to Canada almost
40 years ago I came partially to es-
cape too many laws and regulations.
And these were not even in the
Netherlands' constitution. Regula-
tions alone can make a prison of a
society.
To come back to the purpose of
this column, I urge all readers to
vote "yes" to the question on the
referendum. To do otherwise will
give Quebec separatists just what
they want, a lever to convince
Quebecers they are unwanted in
Canada. That this is not true and
that French speaking Canadians
give our country its flavour, makes
no difference to the likes of Pari-
zeau.
You may not like our prime
minister, but this time he is right.
To vote "no" would put the unity of
Canada at a grave peril and if
Quebec should be unwise enough to
leave we will all suffer. I don't
think that many of you are eager to
join the United States, but that may
be a strong possibility if we vote
"no", because we will have the
choice to become poor or to submit
to U.S. economic power.
I, for one, don't want my grand-
children to join in all the military
actions a U.S. president thinks up to
gather votes. I don't want to
become another "ugly American" if
I travel out of the country.0
