take, the more you can deal with
stress." People have to understand
what the symptoms of stress are and
what remedies there are, he says.
They have to learn to isolate each of
the little problems that accumulate
and deal with each one separately,
instead of letting the combined
troubles suck them under.
Perth County's Neighbours Being
Neighbours program is in its third
year of helping rural people deal with
the problems of modern life. The
program grew out of the proposal
from the executive director of the
Perth County branch of CMHA five
years ago to the Ontario Ministry of
Health for funding for self-help
programs for rural people. Two years
later the funding finally became
available and a series of workshops
were set up to train facilitators to
teach people how to run self-help
groups.
When Health Ministry money ran
out, the CMHA provided partial
funding to keep the program going,
including Marsha Eberhardt's salary
as co-ordinator. By October that
money will have run out and the
group will have to continue without a
co-ordinator.
Eberhardt, a resident of Downie
and Ellice townships for the last 12
years, a former educator who became
a nurse specializing in work in mental
health, says it's frustrating to lose
funding now when the need is high
and when programs are just getting in
place. Funding agencies don't seem
to realize how long it takes to get
programs working, she says.
Using funds from OMAF,
Neighbours Being Neighbours is
planning a series of six workshops in
Si Marys and Milverton this fall. The
first, on "Communication", will be
held in St. Marys on Oct. 29 from 7-
9:30 p.m. with John Rempal of St.
Jerome's College, Waterloo. A
workshop on "Relationship
Dynamics" will be held at Milverton
on Nov. 5 with Barb Dyzak of
Cambridge speaking.
On Nov. 12 there will be a session
on "Dealing with Stress" in St.
Marys. "Conflict Resolution" will be
the topic at a workshop in Milverton,
Nov. 19 with John Rempal, speaking.
"Human Sexuality" will be the topic
of a meeting in Milverton on Nov. 26
with the Perth District Health Unit
leading discussion. The final
