New doctrine?
Re: Perth County Pork Producers
newsletter for July '92.
A minister of the Presbyterian
Church in Canada has taken advan-
tage of his position, stood up in his
"cathedral" in the heart of livestock
country, and proceeded to give us his
version of how things should be.
Speaking as a lifelong Presbyterian, I
have no recollection of ever having
been told that vegetarianism is part of
our Church doctrine.
After having read a transcript of
the entire sermon I can only conclude
that the minister who delivered it has
only a superficial knowledge of farm-
ing. Has he ever really thought out
how the food chain actually works?
At our house we have a pet 10 -
year -old tom cat. He has had all his
shots, all the necessary surgery and
eats his special low ash cat food with
enthusiasm. It is, however, a poor
day if he doesn't catch and eat a
mouse or sparrow. Where did we go
wrong? What must we do to per-
suade "Brandy" to give up killing?
Has the well meaning preacher
ever plowed land and watched flocks
of seagulls eat thousands of defence-
less earthworms? Should we farmers
be required to spread cornflakes or
chickpeas for the gulls so that they
will leave the poor worms alone?
If clergy persons wish to commu-
nicate meaningfully with church
members they should make it a two-
way conversation. If a minister
wishes to comment on things envi-
ronmental perhaps he should at least
talk to livestock people. Farmers ob-
serve birth, life and death on a daily
basis. I honestly believe that this can
help us understand God's plan. Why
should our clergy feel it necessary to
emulate k. d. lang and in so doing
"lose friends and alienate people"?

Fowler on fencing
Really enjoyed the article on
fencing in the August issue of The
Rural Voice by R. A. Fowler. I look
forward to seeing his work again.
