The Rural Voice, 1992-08, Page 43When you leave the waterfront area you'll find yourself, after the long climb uphill, on West St. again. Keep going and you'll hit the shopping area along West St., then The Square itself. You can drive around The Square and turn off at Kingston St. which will take you to the "Five Points" corner at the junction of Hwys. 21 and 8 (the best way to go if you'd like to get some shopping in at the Suncoast Mall on Highway 21 south) or take East St. which will take you to Hwy. 21 if you're heading north. If you'd like to take a side trip, head out Highway 8 to the east toward Clinton. Just outside of Goderich you'll find Apple Park Farm where George Laithwaite built a collection of statues depicting early farmers at work in the early 1930s. The stone and mortar statues are still a popular feature of the farm which sells apples and other farm produce in season. Continue east on Highway 8 and you'll come to the sign pointing the way to Benmiller to your left. Here is a village that agriculture built but that tourism has kept alive. The Gledhill woollen mill once processed wool from local farms while the Pfrimmer Brothers flour mill ground local wheat into pastry flour. Today both mills have been converted to plush resort hotels as part of the Benmiller Inn complex. The Inn offers first class dining as well as accommodation for those wanting to get away from it all in a peaceful country atmosphere. The rippling sound of Sharp's Creek as it flows down into the Maitland River pervades the quiet village. The Benmiller Falls has been an attraction for years and is now part of Falls Reserve Conservation Area, managed by the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority. It's one of the most popular campgrounds in the area. From Benmiller you can go north to Huron Rd. 25 along Huron County Rd. 1, or back to Highway 8 either by taking Huron Rd. 1 or Huron Rd. 31 which will take you through Holmesville, or you can branch off on Huron Rd. 15 just east of Benmiller where it joins Huron Rd. 31, and go east to meet Hwy. 4 at Londesboro. Any of the routes will take you through pretty countryside. — KRO MARK'S * ALL - STAR * SPORTS CARDS Old & New Cards Supplies & Accessories We purchase older Hockey and Baseball cards.
