38 THE RURAL VOICE
The Marine Museum gives a taste of
maritime life.
railway right of way on the other side
of the bridge to the grave of Tiger
Dunlop. Better leave 'yourself more
than an hour to make the trip there
and back and put on a good pair of
walking shoes but the rewards are
breaktaking scenery and a sense of
tracing history.
Back at the harbour, anyone who
has ever been curious to see what it's
like to be on one of those huge
freighters, can get a taste in the
Marine Museum located near the
elevators. It's the wheel house of the
S.S. Jay C. Morse, built in 1907.
When the ship was wrecked for
salvage, the Town of Goderich, and
Huron County bought the wheel
house and set it up as a museum.
Across the harbour is the Domtar
Sifto Salt mine that sinks 1700 feet
below the surface of Lake Huron
where huge tunnels, 43 feet high,
create an underground city complete
with its own highways and repairs
shops for the equipment. Each year
about 100 freighters tie up to haul
away the salt and thousands of trucks
and railway cars keep the flow alive
in winter.
Down here by the waterfront too is
agriculture's sister in the food
industry, fishing. Several fishing tugs
from Goderich venture out on Lake
Huron daily to harvest the freshwater
fishing grounds and you can buy fish
fresh off the boat.
The beach, and the newer beaches
called St. Christopher's Beach and St.
Christopher's Cove to the west,
provide plenty of chance for
swimming or sunbathing.
