The Swamp, to some Tight exercise.
Light it may have been but
nevertheless sufficient to stir noble
Percheron blood for a somewhat
more energetic work-out, as we shall
presently witness.
Arriving at the farmstead, Dad
mutters "hold your horses" to his
runty confederate, leaps from the
wagon and, panting in the agony of
immediate thirst and the anticipa-
tion of imminent relief, thunders
towards our so-called "summer"
kitchen.
This was a period staple of rural
architecture that usually housed a
cream separator — hand operated,
what else? — , most of the horse and
house flies not otherwise occupied in
the barnyard and, at our happy home,
a table on which my mother
sometimes manufactured innovative
iemedies for the ills and sins and
stupid mistakes of her male
associates. One such, designed to
shorten the life expectancy of flying
insects, featured a turpentine base
laced with a dash of mild, jaundice -
coloured toxin.

whether or not this concoction
represented my mother's inventive
genius alone or was, in fact, her
inspired copy of some trade -marked
insecticide then available. No matter.
It was, wen propelled into target
clouds of flies and mosquitoes by
pump sprayer — hand-held and hand -
operated, of course — moderately
successful. That is to say my
mother's insect killer produced piles
of murdered insect corpses in our
"summer" kitchen but the droning
hordes that carpeted the sun -lit
windows of that place somehow
never seemed to diminish. And, a
larger deficiency, its colour and
specific gravity bore a striking
resemblance to lemonade.
We return you now to my father,
dry mouth, cracked lips, protruding
tongue and all, racing towards the
lemonade fix that will ease his
