Grain Markets
Prices fall with rains
Grain industry people usually
look at the July 4 holiday as a
turning point in market prices and
this was no exception. Rain fell
over most of the com belt that
weekend and has not let up since.
As well, a little bit of heat came
into the belt during the first 10 days
of July which is just what the
doctor ordered for good pollination.
CORN
With the onset of summer came
some frost damage in parts of the
U.S. and Ontario which gave prices
a slight kick but since very little
damage was apparent and rains
followed, prices have virtually been
in a free fall to the $2.30s. The dry
conditions that we faced in late
June have been alleviated by the
persistent rains and coupled with
temperatures in the mid 80s, we
have almost perfect pollinating
conditions. The result could be a
crop of 8.5-8.7 billion bushels in
the U.S. and because the present
conditions are all that traders see
right now, prices have no
bullishness left for the time being.
In fact, if the crop conditions
remain good for the balance of the
growing season, prices may not
regain any of the losses. The only
glitch in this scenario is the fact that
the crop is somewhat behind and
there is a chance of an early frost.
But, that would be counting the
chickens before they are hatched.
The last USDA report left com
acreage at just over 79 million acres
and seemed to fudge the usage
numbers to reduce the carryover
this year when, in fact, many
traders feel the feed usage number
is actually lower than USDA
originally stated. In any case, there
