participate in provincial programs?
The Charter of Rights is supposed to
protect us from this happening. Some
farmers will not only pay for their
own farm but also for the farmers
from whom they lease their lands. If I
was one of those farmers renting
pasture or hay, I would certainly pass
this cost on - this is only common
sense.
Also we pay a certain levy to a
particular G.F.O. once a year through
the O.M.M.B. as well through a
County Grant Tax Levy in some
counties. Add all of that up and our
tab is increasingly higher and farm
income is down.
But what bothers me the most is
that we have given our farm policy
making into the hands of our
provincial government which is
closely affiliated with Big Business.
May I ask who contributes the most at
the time of elections and who will get
the bigger plums? Since the
provincial government will now have
we farmers in control and if Big
Business wants, let's say, the end of
Marketing Boards - it will be much
easier to hide behind the scenes.
Finally think of the Big Dollars
revenue for our provincial
government - 25/150 = 16.6% of 10
million is 1.66 million for the
provincial government - not a bad
budget for 12 months to administer
the program.
I must compliment the National
Fanners Union for trying to force
more consultation with grassroots
farmers so that we would obtain the
proper facts. They were told to sign
now or be thrown out of the deal -
NO CHOICE!
In closing how can we trust Mr.
Buchanan and those forcing this new
scheme when they insisted on holding
"open -house meetings" when they
know we farmers are in the busiest
season of the year? Who has the time
to attend meetings let alone time to
read up on the issue beforehand? I
would suggest that farmers call Mr.
Buchanan or farm leaders to find out
what is being fabricated unknown to
the Ontario Farm Grassroots!
