Spring is an ideal time to go for that walk and come home with a basket of goodies for the table. My father's older brother was one such early harvester. He would take a notion to go for a walk or drive along the quiet rolling back roads of Colborne and Wawanosh townships and come home with a little 4 -quart basket of edible treasures. Nestled in the basket were morels, mushrooms, asparagus and sometimes a cluster of wildflowers. My father and some of his brothers used to walk from Goderich to their grandparents farm half way between Auburn and Blyth. It was a lengthy hike of 14 or 15 miles. Along the route they must have dallied on those first warm days of June. After all, when they arrived they were given chores to do, so why not take a few detours through the bush and side trails. My uncle loved to cook, as does my Dad, and would make up the spring bounty of morels with just butter and a grind of pepper. Sometimes he would be accompanied by one or more of his children and would share the meal with them when they returned home. Uncle Garth would come by our house on some of his spring jaunts and my father would try to take a few choice little items for himself but never managed to get away with it. My uncle was well aware that Dad knew where to find his own treasures. With this on our minds we would often look for asparagus along the sideroads within walking distance of our house. Years later I still keep my eyes open for that patch of asparagus along the road.
