Larry does the artificial
insemination work. The Parkins built
a calf nursery in 1979, with
individual pens for 21 calves. "It has
been quite an asset," Larry says.
"We have virtually eliminated calf
deaths. It is easier to evaluate calves
for health when they are separated
and clean. We modified a plan to
make the cleaning easier," he adds.
"We clean seven pens (one row) at a
time with the loader."
The Parkins give farm tours to
school children, mostly in the spring,
with an average of six to eight classes
coming from local schools. "So
many kids have no connection to
farming at all," says Heather. "They
range in age from kindergarten to
grade three. One teacher said she
would have to change her teaching.
She thought all milking was done by
hand!"
Larry Parkin was a director for the
Grey County Holstein Club from
1981 to 1991. Heather is the current
secretary of the organization. "It's
nice to keep up with what is
happening in the industry," she says.
Larry, Heather, Amanda and Brad
went to Ottawa to attend the GATT
rally on February 21. "The American
Dairy Farmers Campaign came to
Ottawa, too," says Larry. "There is
no Milk Marketing Board in the U.S.
About 70 per cent of the dairy
farmers there are in trouble."
Two proposals of the American
Dairy Farmers Campaign are: (1) to
unite dairy farmers; and (2) to win
long-term dairy progress with fair
prices and two-tiered supply
management, run by a farmer -
elected board. (See Hoard's
Dairyman, March 25/92.) "They
came to enlist the help of the
Canadian farmers. It was quite an
experience!" he adds.
The Parkins are actively involved
with area agricultural societies also.
Larry is a director of the Owen Sound
Agricultural Society. "This year
we're bringing back the Grey County
Holstein Show to Owen Sound," he
says. It will be held at the Owen
Sound Fall Fair September 10 to 13
at the Coliseum.
Showing calves is a big part of the
family farm business. "Heather is the
daughter of Robert and Monica
Franklin, and grew up on a farm in
Collingwood, in a family that showed
cattle," states Larry. "She went all
