PROFESSIONALLY SPEAKING:
WHAT IS FARMERS' COMPREHENSIVE
LIABILITY INSURANCE? Professionally speaking is a
new monthly column featuring
a different expert each month.
BY SHEILA McNEIL
Farmers' Comprehensive Liability
Insurance is perhaps one of the lesser
understood forms of insurance. Here
are some of the most commonly
asked questions.
What is it?
Farmers' Comprehensive Liability
Insurance pro-
vides protection
(up to the
specified dollar
limit purchased)
for injuries to
persons or
damage to the
property of
others, caused by
your negligence.
Why is it so
important?
If negligence
is attributed to
you and your
farming
operation, you
could be liable
for compensation
to third parties
(neighbours,
strangers,
employees, automobile drivers, etc.).
If you don't have liability
insurance or you don't have enough,
and a court judgement is awarded
against you, you could be forced to
sell your assets to pay for damages.
A large financial lawsuit could
even result in Toss of your fanning
business. Therefore, it is extremely
important that you carry the proper
type and adequate amount of liability
insurance.
How do I know what I need?
In order to gather information
about your specific needs and then
recommend the level of coverage to
best meet those needs, your farm
insurance sales specialist will ask you
questions like these:
• Does your insurance company
If neg
is attri
know about all the properties you
farm?
• Do you own or lease any
additional farmland?
• Do you own or lease any
additional residence or cottage?
• Do other people farm with you?
• How many tractors and self-
propelled
implements do you
own?
• Do you do
custom farming for
others?
• Do you have
any other business
pursuits which are
incidental to your
farming?
• Are there any
swimming pools on
your property?
• Do you own
any boats?
• Do you own or
care for any exotic
animals?
• Do you own a
pet which has
previously bitten
someone?
• Do you do any kind of crop
spraying which may cause damage to
others?
• Do you use or rent other people's
property?
• Do you permit or conduct tours of
your farm for school or community
groups?
Most insurance companies
employ Farm Insurance Specialists
who are trained to help simplify the
very complex topic of liability
insurance as well as clarify any other
farm insurance concerns you may
have.0
