DISTRESS ALERT
DEVICE BECOMING
MORE POPULAR
A safety device that provides com-
munication with emergency services 24
hours a day is gaining popularity with
the elderly, the handicapped, and poten-
tial victims of physical abuse. The
device allows the user to summon help
with the push of a button on a small,
lightweight pendant worn around the
neck.
When the button is pressed, a radio
signal with a range of 300 to 500 feet
(100 to 125 metres) is sent to a receiving
device installed into the user's standard
phone jack. This activates an automatic
dialer that is pre-programmed to call a
24 hour monitoring station. When an
alarm is received at the monitoring sta-
tion, instructions obtained from the user
at the time of installation are carried out.
This usually involves calling police and/
or ambulance, family members living
close by, or neighbours who have been
supplied with a key.
The unit is complete with a back-up
battery system in the event of power
failure, and it does not interrupt the
normal use of the user's telephone. It is
installed in a matter of minutes, and can
be placed on a desk or table hidden from
view completely.
This system is available throughout
Ontario from Georgian Bay Fire and
Safety Supplies Ltd. The complete unit
is rented for $27.50 per month, which
includes the monitoring service. Instal-
lation is free, and financial assistance is
usually available to those in genuine
need through various government sup-
ported services. Phone 519-273-7250
