The Rural Voice, 1991-09, Page 63WHAT'S NEW BOOK OUTLINES FARM FAMILIES Farm families and farm fanciers will wish that they had come along for the ride when they read all about Phil Jen- kins' and Ken Ginn's journeys in Fields of Vision, a new book to be published by McClelland & Stewart. Two years ago, Phil Jenkins, a writer, musician, and literacy worker, and Ken Ginn, a professional photogra- pher, decided to drive across Canada from the farm farthest east to the farm farthest west, and talk to family farmers. Along the way, they met ordinary people with extraordinary stories. What they came back with was a treasure trove of remarkable tales and insights into the nature of farming and the state of the Canadian family farm. The results of their travels is Fields of Vision, a delightful book filled with fabulous photographs that people will not want to put down once they pick it up. Phil Jenkins and Ken Ginn's journey started in a cow field overlooking Logy Bay, near St. John's Newfoundland — Canada's easternmost farm — where the elderly Powers brothers still milk their herd by hand, having tried and rejected milking machines years ago. In spite of offers for up to $25 million, Kevin and Charles Powers refuse to sell the farm that has been in their family for generations. The journey ends on an island in the Yukon River, upstream from Dawson City, farmed by the Dowdells, who had no idea that theirs was the westernmost farm in Canada. Fields of Vision is a guide to the various regions of Canada as well as an introduction to some of the people in each of those regions who derive their living from the land, people like: Diane Harkin of Winchester, Ontario, the city - bred founder of Women for Survival in Agriculture, and Allen Wilford of Owen Sound, a former farmer and farm activist turned law student, who found his sec- ond calling after the banks foreclosed on his farm — "to screw the banks." Fields of Vision, Phil Jenkins and Ken Ginn, $29.95. Hardcover, 304 pages, with 32 pages of colour photo- graphs.0 THE FAMILY FARM HERE TODAY ...
