1991 INNOVATION
COMPETITION
The winner of the $1000 first prize at
this year's "innovation competition" at
the Ontario Pork Congress was the entry
of Dennis Zchr, R.R. I, Brunner, for his
"power failure door."
At the congress, Dennis had a work-
ing model of the innovation consisting
of a door, a door frame, and an electro-
magnet to hold the door closed. In the
event of a power failure, the magnet
releases and the offset hinges allow the
door to swing open. This provides
enough fresh air to prevent excessive
heat buildup in the room. Second place
went to Mike Sodemans, R. R. 6, Forest,
for his "bagger." This was a dolly with
a spike for collecting premix bags to
keep the feed room neat and tidy.
Third place went to Kurt and Pat
Keller for their "bio feedback proces-
sor," which grinds up frozen baby pigs
with corn to feed back to their dry sows
as a form of oral vaccination.
The $500 Energy Efficiency Award
sponsored by Ontario Hydro was won
by John Van Engelen, R. R. 2, Thedford,
for his "underground heat exchanger."
For the past eight winters, John has
brought the air for his grower pigs
through drainage tiles under the finish-
ing barn. This prewarms the air elimi-
nating the need for supplemental heat.
This year's event drew 36 entries, of
which 22 were place in competition at
the congress. There were 14 entrants
who were able to bring the innovation or
model of it for display. A total of 1256
people voted over the three days.
The winner of the weekend for two
in Toronto including accommodations
at Harbour Castle Westin and a Blue
Jays game was Neil Fleming, R.R. 1,
Rodney.°
