CATTLE HARNESS
EASES TREATMENT
A British company has developed a
special harness for use in the treatment
of what is known as "downercow syn-
drome," a condition which is associated
with calcium or magnesium deficiency,
and which is becoming more prevalent
with the growth of intensive farming.
Cattle suffering from "downercow"
are usually discovered recumbent and
incapable of walking. Some means is
required to lift the animal, move it from
the field to a recovery area and, after
injection of the appropriate medication,
hold it in an upright position until it has
recovered. The economically priced
Downacow Harness from Alfred Mur-
ray is both simple and effective, and is
designed to speed complete recovery.
The harness, constructed from rot -
resistant webbing, is designed to offer a
cradle -type support which leaves the
udder clear to allow suckling or milking,
and minimizes the risk of secondary
mastitis. Galvanized -steel fittings on
the harness allow the cow to be lifted
either by the front-end loader of a tractor
so that it can be moved to a recovery
area, or by block -and -tackle. Appropri-
ate medication is then administered.
Following this, the harness is used to
hold the cow in a standing position with
its feet just touching the ground. This
encourages leg movements which speed
recovery and reduce muscle wastage as-
sociated with long periods of recum-
bency. The harness can be fitted to a
cow in a few minutes by two people.
