cavated to 18 and 24 inch depths. I
would be reeling if someone told me
that, but the wisdom of that advice
becomes evident when reading about
Midge's gardens. Whenever she
excavated a garden or stripped an old
one, she referred to Mr. Biles and dug
the appropriate depth. I distinctly
remember the tulips should be planted
nine inches below ground, which
means digging the area 12 inches deep
to accommodate three inch bulbs. I
think mine went in last fall at a mere
six inches. The increased depth stops
the bulbs from dividing or splitting
keeping the blooms large and true to
size and colour. I may have to dig
again in the late spring to rescue some
bulbs from their shallow beds.
Among the diary entries in Midge's
book are notes for the novice gardener
from which even the pros may learn a
little. Midge recommends that anyone
buying a lot or home feel and smell
the soil before buying. Good soil is
rich brown, not black, and has no
chemical odour. It is soft and clingy .
Clay soil is sticky when wet, and
hard when dry, nearly impossible to
work. The recipe for fixing is this .. .
double digging, mixing in compost or
hot manure, sand, and humus. Please
remember that if you are using hot
manure, leave the garden for a year
before planting Of course, Mr. Biles
would excavate two feet and put in
two inches of gravel for drainage.
Sandy soil can be improved with
moistened peat moss and all the com-
post you can find. If you have time,
seed down with buckwheat, rye, or
clover. Plow down before they flower.
Acid soil can be modified with
lime, or plant acid loving plants such
as heather, azaleas, or blueberries.
And of course there is stony soil.
Since we live on a gravel ridge, I am
THERE ARE CHEAPER WAYS

But unfortunately, they usually come with strings attached. With a
Radius two-way radio, you can say what you want, when you want.
It's so Tight -weight, compact, portable, and dependable. And, you can
do it under all types of job conditions. Radius radios have already
been tested under the worst conditions possible. The best thing is
while Radius' quality is unmistakeably superior, the price isn't.
So if you want to state your message clearly, do it with Radius.
No strings attached. tiMa
