interface, the temperature is -196°C,
warming as you move vertically
through the vapour to -150°C.
Baillargeon sayst the existence of this
temperature gradient is really not a
problem, because seed respiration
stops at -37°C and at -80°C there is
absolutely no reaction. Even at its
warmest, the nitrogen vapour is much
colder than the safety limit of -100°C.
Because the technology is new,
Baillargeon stresses any seeds stored
in these freezers will be continually

tested for germination. In the begin-
ning, he says every sample will be
tested, and after the data are collected,
a decision will be made about whether
or not to continue testing at that rate.
Seeds not tolerant of this freezing
process will be stored in the conven-
tional freezers, which means they will
have to be renewed every 25 years
instead of every 100 years.
One of the real advantages of this
system is the wide safety margin. One
liquid nitrogen tank keeps a freezer
running for three weeks. Baillargeon
says the system will operate with two
tanks, the second taking over automat-
ically when the first runs out. PGRC
then has a maximum of three weeks in
which to replace the empty tank.
This is a far cry from the conven-
tional freezers, which begin to warm
as soon as there is a power cut or
systems failure. Baillargeon says that
life being what it is, failures inevitably
occur on Friday afternoon, making
repair impossible for several days.
This is not a tragedy, however, be-
cause the freezers warm up slowly,
and even if they do reach room tem-
perature, the seeds will not die. They
come out of dormancy, and start to
age, which is not good, but not a
disaster. Since we live in a developed
country, he says the problem will
