MILK HOUSE WASTE
HAS SOLUTION
The widespread use of pipeline
milking systems has made the dairy
farmer's life much easier, but it has also
greatly increased the amount of water
and chemicals needed to clean milking
equipment. A typical operation pro-
duces 150 gallons of wash water a day.
What can farmers do about this prob-
lem? There are a number of solutions.
Which one is right for you will depend
on what type of operation you have.
Farmers with liquid manure storage
can add the milkhouse wash water to
their liquid manure storage. This solu-
tion is cheap and simple and has no
effect on the quality of the manure.
The challenge seems to be to provide
inexpensive and simple solutions to
those farmers who do not have liquid
storage facilities. From an environ-
mental point of view, the installation of
septic systems onto milkhouses seems
an ideal solution. They are relatively
cheap and simple, and since phosphorus
is so immobile in soils, they completely
eliminate any phosphorus pollution.
However in the past, these systems
gained a reputation as being unreliable.
What can be done to make them
work? It has been found that farmers
who are pre -rinsing their pipelines, even
with only one bucket of water, and feed-
ing that first rinse water to their calves
instead of putting it down into the septic
tank, have had years of trouble-free
service from their systems. This makes
sense since it is only the milk in the wash
water which plugs up the weeping bed.
In addition, old systems which have
plugged up will restore themselves if
left alone for 10-12 months. Many
farmers who abandoned their old sys-
tems can use them again very success-
fully as long as they do not dump whole
milk or put rinse water into the system.
I am also looking for some farmer
co-operators to work with on these and
other simple, practical solutions to this
very serious environmental problem.
