The Rural Voice, 1991-02, Page 43WHAT'S NEW PRIMALAC OKAYED BY AG CANADA Probiotics are a new classification to Agriculture Canada's feed regulatory department., but the concept's ability to control scours was made known to vet- erinarians at the University of Guelph as early as 1944. Wide acceptance of live- stock probiotics did not occur until the late 70s when Star Labs of St. Joseph, Missouri, developed a heat and antibi- otic stable group of micro-organisms called Primalac. Nuhn Bio -Tech of Stratford, On- tario, has done field trials with most Canadian hog premix companies over the past five years. The results were very positive, but a decision to work towards registration with poultry was made to coincide with the latest research completed at North Carolina and Kan- sas State Universities by Star Labs. The results were conclusive that Primalac could competitively exclude salmonella organisms in an infected flock. These findings and the consistent reduction in mortality responses were published in the United States. Feed trials began in Canada, conducted by Dr. Conrad Van Dijk and Dr. John Radu, in July of 1989. The test flock receiving Primalac in their pelleted ration showed better feed conversion and average weight. The test was repeated in May of 1990 with a competitor's enzyme, ammonia control product added to the ration and again a significant improvement was shown by the Primalac birds. Nuhn Bio -Tech plans to have a Canadian university study performed with grower hogs, and one with veal calves, completed by the fall of 1991.
