The Rural Voice, 1991-02, Page 35existence of the family farm as well as
the farm family. The farm family is,
ultimately, the guarantee of a whole-
some, safe source of food. When food
is produced in large quantities, quality
of food is sacrificed; 2. to continue
the fight for lower farm production
costs, particularly lower interest rates.
The price of parts, repairs, and fuel, to
name a few, have all risen dramatic-
ally, while the farmer still receives $1
for a square bale of hay; 3. to urge the
practice of good stewardship and
preservation, where possible, of our
natural resources — land, water, bush -
lots; 4. to co-operate and coexist with
people moving into rural areas. Being
a good neighbour is still important!
One change that has affected the
CFW is the number of farm women
who have taken off -farm jobs. Many
farms need this subsidy to continue to
operate. The exodus into the work
force of farm wives and mothers adds
strain and stress to daily life on the
farm. The farmer often works alone
and fends for himself at mealtime,
while the farm wife feels guilty at
having left the farm to work.
On the other hand, some farmers
have gone to work full-time and the
farm wife has had to take over the
chores and the daily running of the
farming operation. This is particularly
true in the areas where the farmer
works "in the city" and leaves home
Monday moming and returns Friday
night. Many farm families are
disrupted by this social change and are
having a hard time coping with all
these changes.
This year marks the tenth anni-
versary of CFW. Plans are being
made for a 10 -year reunion -banquet to
be held in the fall. Any former mem-
bers that would like to be a part of this
reunion can contact the group.
The main purpose of Concerned
Farm Women has been and always
will be a support group for women and
farm families. When a farm goes
under, much more is lost than a job.
Too often the sacrifices are a home, a
way of life, and, all too often, the farm
family itself. As long as there is one
farm family that is fighting to survive,
the work of Concerned Farm Women
will continue.°
